If you’re planning on moving to Alpharetta, Georgia, you should know that Alpharetta sits about 45 minutes to an hour north of Midtown Atlanta, depending on traffic. While it’s very much a suburb, it’s technically still part of Fulton County—the same county as Atlanta itself. Fulton is one of the largest counties in Georgia and includes cities like Johns Creek, Roswell, and Sandy Springs. So although you’re getting suburban charm, you’re still tied to Atlanta’s county seat.
2. It’s Arguably the Nicest—and Most Expensive—Suburb in Metro Atlanta
Alpharetta is beautiful. Period. The city takes excellent care of public spaces with manicured landscaping, wide sidewalks, and even underground power lines in some areas (a rarity in metro Atlanta). But all that beauty comes at a price. Alpharetta consistently ranks as one of the most expensive suburbs in the area. However, many people find that the beauty, safety, and quality of life here justify the cost.
3. Tons of Local Jobs—Especially in Tech
One of the biggest draws to Alpharetta is its strong local economy. The area is home to a large number of tech companies and corporate offices, making it a hub for employment in metro Atlanta. If you can live and work in Alpharetta, you could avoid the typical 30-minute to 1-hour commute that many metro Atlantans endure. A 15-minute commute? In this city? That’s practically gold.
4. The Schools Are Top-Tier
Alpharetta is known for having some of the best public schools in all of metro Atlanta. Unlike other suburbs where school quality can vary drastically from one side of town to another, Alpharetta’s schools are consistently strong. That’s a huge win for families with kids—and a big reason why so many people move here.
5. The Housing Market Is Extremely Competitive
Alpharetta’s popularity means the housing market is hot. While bidding wars have cooled down in other parts of metro Atlanta, they still pop up here. Homes often sell quickly—many within a week or two—and full-price offers are the norm. If you’re buying, be prepared to move fast and bring your A-game. If you’re selling, congrats—you’re in one of the most stable markets in the region.
6. Highway 400 = Lifeline and Bottleneck
If you’re commuting to Atlanta, chances are you’ll take Highway 400, the main artery connecting Alpharetta to the city. While it’s technically a highway, 400 functions more like an interstate with heavy traffic and frequent slowdowns—especially near the Sandy Springs interchange. This stretch is known for accidents and bottlenecks during rush hour, so plan accordingly (or work from home when possible).
